Running a slideshow
1. Click on the FILE button located on the top menu bar, select SLIDE SHOW and click.
2. You can filter the images using the FILTER BY BIRD function on the top menu bar;
see ‘Filtering your records in Bird Image Library’.
3. When you have filtered your records click on the START button at the bottom left.
Clicking on the start button without filtering your records will show all of the images in
the database.
4. You can end the slide show by clicking EXIT at any time; Note, the program may
pause for a moment when you do this as it empties the images from memory.

Adding your first record to Bird Image Library
1. Click on the yellow cross, located on the top menu bar. This creates a blank record.
2. Set the date in the DATE box.
3. Set the name of the bird in the BIRD box.
4. Type any notes you want to make about the bird in the NOTES box.
5. Now click the top blue button (shows two arrows) next to each image box. The
standard windows ‘Open file dialog’ will appear. Navigate to the image you would like
to add to your record. (We recommend your store all of your images for use with the
program in one folder, ideally in your documents folder. This helps avoid accidentally
moving an image and causing an error in the program when Bird Image library cannot
find it. See ‘Image links’ note at bottom.) When you have identified your image either
double click on it or highlight it and click OPEN.
6. Click on the small drop box next to the image box to alter how the image is
displayed.
7. Repeat the above for each image box and click the save button (image of blue disc on
top menu bar).
8. You can add details for each image in the DETAIL box under each image.
9. If you have more than 6 images for a particular bird you can create another blank
record as in step 1. Name the bird in the BIRD box the same.

Filtering your records in Bird Image Library
1. As you begin to build up a number of records you will want to be able to find images
easily. You can do this by filtering your records.
2. In the text box on the top menu bar, type in the name of the bird you want to look at.
For example if you wanted to look at images of Chaffinches, type in Chaffinch and
click the FILTER button to the right of the text box. The program will filter all your
records and exclude any records that do not have Chaffinch in the BIRD box.
3. You can bring back all your records at any point by clicking REMOVE FILTER.
4. The filter can be used to search for ‘part names’ of birds. For example typing warbler
into the text box will give you all records with warbler as part of the birds name: Willow
warbler, Wood warbler etc. Typing in w would return all records with w in the bird’s
name, for example Wheatear, Warbler, Wren etc.

A note about image links
Bird Image Library does not store the actual image in the database, it stores the location
of the image in the form of a link. If after adding an image to your database you move the
image to another folder the database will display an error when that record is
subsequently displayed. If you get this error you can simply delete the existing link and
add the new image location as you would when adding a new image. We recommend
avoiding this problem by storing all of your bird images in the same folder possibly in
you’re MY DOCUMENTS area of your computer and not move images or folders that are
being used by Bird Image Library.
