Add a Record;

1.On the ‘Bird Tick List Home’ screen click on the yellow cross on the tool bar at
the top of the screen. An empty record is created.

2.The date in the ‘Date:’ box will default to the current day or session. If you need
to change the date then click on the small down arrow to the left of the box. Click
on the date you require.

3.Enter the bird you have seen in the ‘Bird Seen:’ box, by clicking in the box and
starting to type the birds name. A drop box will appear with a selection of birds to
choose from, select one with the mouse. Or you can click on the World Bird icon
on the left of the text box and search for a bird in the World Bird database. When
you find the bird that you want you can click the 'Use this Bird' button and the bird
details are pasted into the text box of your record.

4.If the bird you regularly use is not on the drop list you can add it to the drop box,
see Add bird to Drop list for future uses.

5.Fill out the other boxes as required.

6.There are 2 ways to add an image to your record:
(A) Click on either ‘+’ button next to the photo boxes. A file dialog box will appear,
navigate to the folder that holds your images, select a file and click open. The image
will be loaded into the photo box.
(B) Use the 3 Click system; right click and select 'copy' on any image and then click
the      button... thats it!

Note: You can load images you have created yourself or found on the Internet
subject to copyright laws. We would advise that you use the JPEG format and
you reduce the file size of the image. If you get them off the Internet this will
have already been done. A database full of very large files will become slow to
use, unless you have a very powerful computer.

7.Click on the actual image in the photo box and a further box will appear to allow
you to enter further information about the image. Click the save icon on this box
when you have entered any information and then close the box.

8.When you have finished entering your information click on the Save data icon on
the tool bar at the top of the screen, your record is now saved to the database. And
you can press the yellow '+' button again to add another bird.
Using Repeat Fill When Adding Records;

1.Click on the add a record button on the ‘Bird Tick List Home’ screen.

2.Select ‘Use Repeat Fill’ from the ‘File’ menu.

3.The blue icon buttons that appear copy information and paste information in and
out of the individual text boxes. Example: Type a location into the ‘Location:’ box.
Click the top blue icon at the end of the text box. Continue adding your record and
save. Click add new record. This time click the bottom blue icon at the end of the
location text field, the previous location text is copied in.

4.When adding records you can use any of the blue icons to copy and fill text
boxes. If you would like to copy all text boxes to the next record you can save time
by using the red icons at the top right, these are; copy all, paste all and clear all,
buttons. Note: If you hold the mouse over any ‘repeat fill’ box a tool tip will
appear to tell you what it’s function is.

Delete A Record;

1.On the ‘Bird Tick List Home’ screen, click the red cross on the tool bar at the
top of the screen. The record you are in at that time will be deleted. This record
cannot be retrieved once deleted.
Filter Records also known as Query Records;

1.At the bottom left of the ‘Bird Tick List Home’ screen is the ‘Query Database’
function. This is used to filter out or search for a particular type or piece of
information. Example: If you want to look at all records for a particular location you
would select the ‘location’ tab. In the text box you would type the name of the
location and click the location button. The database will then only show you records
for that location.

2.If a location you had entered previously had a different spelling or punctuation the
filter tool would ignore that record. This is over come with a powerful function
known as the wildcard.
Example: You want to search your records for ‘Tynemouth’
(A)If you enter ‘Tyne mouth’ into the filter tool no records would be found.
(B)If you enter ‘Tinemouth’ no records would be found.
(C)If you enter ‘T%’ all locations starting with a T would be found.
(D)If you enter ‘%mouth% all locations containing mouth would be found.
Using wild cards like this is a very powerful way of searching the database.

5.If you place your mouse over the ‘Query Database’ tabs a tool tip will appear to
tell you what it’s function is and what format you should use to carry out searches.

Add bird to Drop list; (Pre Version 3.5.5)

1.The ‘Bird Seen:’ drop down list on the ‘Bird Tick List Home’ screen contains
the names of most British birds. However you may see a rare bird that is not on this
list. You could just type it into the box and save the record but in the interests of
consistency it is better to add the bird to the drop down list.

2.Click on the file menu and select ‘Add Bird To Drop List’. An input box appears
in which you enter the bird’s name. Take time to ensure you type in the spelling
correctly and ensure the first letter is upper case, for example; Chaffinch not
chaffinch. Click OK when you have finished and the bird will be added to the drop
down list.

Version 3.5.5 onwards;

1 You can add birds in the built-in text editor on the file menu of the home screen
named 'Edit Drop List' .

2 You can also add birds from the 'World Bird' screen using the 'Add This Bird to
my Drop List' button. The World Bird screen is opened by clicking the 'Get Bird'
button on home screen.
Review Records;

1.You can click through your records using the navigation bar at the top of the ‘Bird
Tick List Home’ screen. Or on any of the other views.
World Bird Database;

* The World Bird Database is accessed through the home screen 'Get Bird' button
or the World Bird Menu also on the home screen.

* As with the main database you can add, delete and edit records as well as
attaching       images and notes.

* North American Bird Identification;
The button in center screen 'North American Bird Identification' connects to the
Cornell Lab website. If you click the icon whilst showing a 'none' North American
bird you will get a message informing you that this bird will not feature on the
Cornell website. You can use the filter 'search by breeding range' to fill the database
with only North American birds if you want to browse all NA birds.
(Please note the Cornell site does not feature every known NA bird but they are
being added all of the time, you may occasionally get a 'page not found error')

* Add This Bird To My Drop List;
If you frequently use a bird you may like to add it to the drop list on the Home
Screen, this button does just that.

Editing the drop list on Home Screen; (pre Version 3.5.5)

You will have to edit the text file which holds the list of birds, try this;

Start, Computer, select C:/ drive, select program files, select/open tick list software
folder, select/open bird tick list folder, look for 'autofile'.

(A) Autofile.txt holds your list of birds for the drop list, you can open in a text editor
and add, delete birds as you like as long as its one per line.
(B) If you simply delete the file, Bird Tick List should create it with all birds present
the next time you start bird tick list.

Editing the drop list on Home Screen; (Version 3.5.5 onwards)

1 On the Home Screen Click the 'File' menu, choose 'Edit Drop List'.

2 Edit the list at will as you would any text document using you mouse, keyboard
and delete keys.

3 Ensure you only have one bird per line.

4 Delete spaces.

5 Click Save changes when you have finished.
